An amendment to the Polish Citizenship Act came into force on August 1, 2025, introducing two significant changes.
First, stamp duties have been increased:
- Recognition as a Polish citizen – PLN 1,000,
- Confirmation of citizenship or loss of citizenship – PLN 277,
- Acceptance of an application for citizenship or consent to renunciation – PLN 1,669.
Second, the deadline for processing cases has been extended to six months. In practice, this change will not improve the situation at the Mazowieckie Voivodeship Office, where the waiting time for a decision is currently approximately 15–16 months, and in other voivodeships it may even extend the current proceedings.
The changes do not address the problems associated with the excessive length of administrative proceedings in citizenship matters. Increased fees and extended deadlines may result in a reduction in the number of applications submitted and, consequently, limit access to the procedure for recognition or confirmation of Polish citizenship.
